Passagem Franca lies in the east of Maranhão, in the interior between the Amazonian north of the state and the drier country toward Piauí. From above, the town is a small, fairly regular grid of streets around a central square, surrounded by open land of scrub and fields. A few roads leave in straight lines toward neighbouring towns.
The name suggests a crossing point, and the town has served as a local centre for the rural area around it. Like many towns of the Brazilian interior, it grew around a church and square, with streets extending outward in blocks as the population increased. The map has no river front or coastline, just the town and the land.
