Piranshahr lies in the south of West Azerbaijan province, in the Zagros mountains close to Iran's border with the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. The city occupies a valley floor surrounded by rising slopes, so the terrain defines its shape on a map. Streets fill the level ground and thin out where the land begins to climb toward the ridges.
Most residents are Kurdish, and the city has long been a local centre for trade and farming in the surrounding valleys and uplands.
