Pivijay lies in the flat lowlands of Magdalena Department in northern Colombia, a region of pastures, seasonal wetlands and slow waterways between the Magdalena River and the Sierra Nevada. From above, the town looks like a neat block of streets laid on level ground, with farmland stretching away in every direction.
The plan is a straightforward grid of the kind found across the Colombian Caribbean. Blocks are set around a central plaza and church, and the streets widen and thin out toward the edges.
