Portalegre is the capital of the northern Alentejo district, built on a hillside at the foot of the Serra de São Mamede near the Spanish border. From above, the historic centre is a compact knot of narrow streets that once lay within walls, crowned by the cathedral and the remains of a castle. The city's cathedral dates from the sixteenth century, and Portalegre became known for its textile industry, particularly the hand-woven Portalegre tapestries, a craft still associated with the city.
