Prairie Village is a first-ring suburb of Kansas City, on the Kansas side of the state line in Johnson County. Its map has a clear signature. Instead of a strict grid, most residential streets curve and loop gently, forming long, rounded blocks of single-family homes on large tree-covered lots.
The community was developed by J.C. Nichols in the 1940s and 1950s as a planned residential suburb, and it was incorporated as a city in 1951. At its centre is the Prairie Village Shopping Center, one of the region's early suburban shopping centres, set where the main roads cross.
