Radcliffe is in the Metropolitan Borough of Bury in Greater Manchester, spread along the valley of the River Irwell. The river loops through the town in wide bends, and much of the map is organised around it. Terraced streets sit on the higher ground, former industrial land lines the water, and the town centre gathers near the crossing.
Like many Lancashire towns, Radcliffe grew in the nineteenth century with textile, paper and chemical works. The long, parallel rows of terraced houses from that period still survive. The route of the Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal passes through the area, and the Metrolink line toward Bury draws a firm straight line across the town.
