Ruy Barbosa lies in the interior of Bahia, in the hilly, semi-arid country west of Salvador and towards the Chapada Diamantina. The town is named after Rui Barbosa, the Bahian jurist and statesman who was one of the most prominent figures of early republican Brazil.
