Rzhev lies on the upper Volga in Russia's Tver Oblast, and the river divides the town into two parts. From above, the Volga is the dominant line, winding through the centre with bridges linking the banks. Streets on both sides run down toward the water, and the older blocks sit close to the embankments while newer districts spread outward.
The town is best known for the Battles of Rzhev of 1942 and 1943, among the longest and costliest of the Second World War on the Eastern Front. In 2020, the Rzhev Memorial to the Soviet Soldier was opened nearby, a large monument dedicated to those who fought in the area.
