San Javier lies in the east of Santa Fe province in Argentina, on the San Javier river, one of the channels running through the wide floodplain of the Paraná. The town is laid out in the regular grid typical of the region, with square blocks and a central plaza. To the east the land breaks up into lagoons, islands and meandering water that fill the map with irregular shapes.
The town traces its origins to the eighteenth century, when a Jesuit mission was founded here among the Mocoví people. Today it is a centre for the surrounding farmland and ranches, and the river draws people for fishing and time outdoors in the warmer months.
