San Juan lies in Hidalgo County in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas, one of a chain of cities strung along the US 83 corridor. The land is almost perfectly flat and was once citrus groves and farmland. The city is best known for the Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan del Valle, a national shrine that draws pilgrims from across Texas and Mexico.
