San lies in the Ségou region of central Mali, on the flat Sahelian plain a short distance from the Bani River, a major tributary of the Niger. From above it appears as a spread of low compounds and unpaved lanes. The street pattern is loose and irregular, and a few main roads lead out across the plain toward other towns of the region.
The town is known for the Sanké mon, a collective fishing rite held each year in a sacred pond on its outskirts. UNESCO recognises it as intangible cultural heritage. San also has a large mud-brick mosque in the Sudano-Sahelian style. Its broad earthen walls belong to a building tradition seen across the Niger basin.
