Santa Ana is the district in Cusco's La Convención Province whose main town is widely known as Quillabamba. It sits in a warm valley where the Andes drop towards the Amazon lowlands. From above, the Urubamba River runs along the town, and the streets fill the flat land beside it. Steep, forested slopes rise on both sides.
The valley is known for coffee, cacao and fruit, and its climate is much warmer than the highlands around Cusco. Many travellers heading into the lowland forest pass through. The town works as the commercial centre of a large rural area, and roads follow the river both upstream and downstream.
