Santa Vitória do Palmar is the southernmost city in Brazil, close to the Uruguayan border at the bottom of Rio Grande do Sul. It stands on a low strip of land separating Lagoa Mirim to the west from Lagoa Mangueira and the ocean to the east. From above the town is a neat pattern of blocks surrounded by almost perfectly flat country, where water is never far away.
The name refers to the palm groves that once covered much of the area, particularly the butiá palms typical of the southern pampa. The land around the town is given over to rice fields and cattle pasture, divided by drainage channels and long straight roads. The Chuí crossing into Uruguay lies further south, and the long, open beach of Hermenegildo sits on the Atlantic side.
