Sarıkamış sits high on the plateau of Kars Province in eastern Anatolia, at an altitude where winters are long and snow is reliable. The town itself is modest in size, with a fairly regular grid of streets on a gentle slope. From above, it appears as a defined block of streets set into a landscape of forested hills that rise around it.
The forests are the main reason the town is known today. Extensive stands of Scots pine cover the surrounding mountains, unusual in this otherwise open part of eastern Turkey, and they frame one of the country's best-known ski areas. The railway between Kars and Erzurum passes through the town, adding a long curving line across the map.
Sarıkamış is also remembered for the battle fought here in the winter of 1914 to 1915, when an Ottoman offensive against Russian forces ended in heavy losses, many caused by extreme cold.
