Sark is one of the smaller Channel Islands and lies east of Guernsey. From above it is a compact plateau edged almost entirely by steep cliffs. The island has two parts, Great Sark to the north and Little Sark to the south. They are connected by La Coupée, a narrow ridge with sheer drops on both sides and a road along its crest.
There are no cars on Sark. People get around on foot, by bicycle, by horse-drawn carriage or by tractor, so the map shows lanes and tracks rather than roads in the usual sense. These spread across open fields between scattered houses and farms. The small harbours sit at the foot of the cliffs and are reached from the plateau by short tunnels and steep paths.
In 2011 Sark became the world's first designated Dark Sky Island, recognised for its lack of light pollution. It also kept a feudal system of government until reforms in 2008. Car-free lanes
Without motor traffic, Sark's lanes and paths are fine and informal. They link farms, fields and the village area in an irregular web across the plateau.
Cliffs and coves
The coastline breaks into headlands, coves and offshore rocks. This gives the island a ragged, detailed edge that contrasts with its quiet, open interior.
