Schmalkalden lies on the southwestern edge of the Thuringian Forest, in a valley where the Schmalkalde stream flows through. The old town is exceptionally well preserved. Its lanes form a tight, irregular core lined with half-timbered houses, and newer districts spread out along the valley floor and up the lower slopes.
The town has a place in European history. In 1531 Protestant princes and cities formed the Schmalkaldic League here to defend the Reformation, and the Schmalkald Articles written by Martin Luther take their name from the town. Above the centre stands Wilhelmsburg Castle, a Renaissance palace.
