Schorndorf sits in the Rems valley in Baden-Württemberg, a short distance east of Stuttgart. The river runs along the valley floor, and the town grew up beside it with its old centre forming a compact, rounded block. From above, the tight streets of that core stand out clearly against the looser residential areas that climb the slopes on either side.
The historic centre is known for its half-timbered houses and broad market square, and the street plan still follows the line of the old town fortifications. Schorndorf is also the birthplace of Gottlieb Daimler, the engineering pioneer, and his birth house still stands in the old town. The castle, on the edge of the centre, also survives from the town's fortified past.
