Selm lies on the southern edge of the Münsterland in North Rhine-Westphalia, where the flat farmland of Westphalia meets the Lippe valley and the Ruhr begins. It isn't one dense core. On the map it reads as several settlements, Selm itself, Bork and Cappenberg, linked by roads across fields, hedgerows and woodland, each with its own small cluster of streets.
Cappenberg sits on a wooded rise and is home to Cappenberg Castle and its collegiate church, known for the Cappenberg Head, a medieval reliquary bust associated with Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. Closer to Selm, the Ternscher See, a former gravel pit, has become a lake for bathing and walking. The former colliery settlement adds a more regular pattern of workers' housing.
