Senekal is a farming town in the eastern Free State of South Africa. Like many towns founded in the nineteenth century on the interior plateau, it was planned as a grid, with long straight streets meeting at right angles and a church square at the centre. On a map the result is a clear, orderly pattern set within a much larger, open landscape.
The town is named after Frederik Petrus Senekal, a commandant of the Orange Free State. The surrounding district is agricultural, dominated by maize, wheat and livestock farming, and the Highveld plain stretches outward in broad fields broken by occasional low hills and dams.
