Sharypovo lies in the southwest of Krasnoyarsk Krai, on the open steppe of the Kansk-Achinsk coal basin. Much of the modern town was built in the late Soviet era to house workers for the nearby Berezovskaya power station and the Berezovsky open-pit mine. On the map, this history shows in the regular layout of wide streets and large residential blocks.
The planned districts sit apart from the older settlement and the industrial sites. Around them, the landscape is flat and open, with fields, lakes and scattered woodland. The power station and the mine are separate from the town, linked to it by roads and railways that run straight across the countryside.
