Shima belongs to Chongqing, the vast municipality on the eastern side of the Sichuan Basin where almost nothing is flat. Seen from above, the town is shaped by terrain first and planning second. Streets curve to follow ridgelines and valley floors, and the built-up area fits into the gaps the hills allow rather than spreading evenly in every direction.
