South Holland is a village in Cook County, Illinois, south of Chicago. Like much of the region, it is organised on a strict grid. Section-line roads divide it into large squares, which are then filled with residential streets, cul-de-sacs and commercial strips along the main arteries.
The village was founded by Dutch settlers in the nineteenth century, and its name reflects that origin. For decades the surrounding land was intensively farmed before suburban development took over. The Little Calumet River runs through the area in loose bends, the one natural line that refuses to follow the grid.
