Stilfontein is a mining town in North West province, close to Klerksdorp, founded to serve the gold mines in the middle of the twentieth century. Its map reflects that origin. The residential streets are laid out in a planned pattern of curves and blocks, and around the town the landscape is marked by shaft sites, rail spurs and the large flat shapes of tailings dams.
The surrounding land is typical Highveld: open, fairly level ground broken by small watercourses and farmland. Roads connect Stilfontein with Klerksdorp and the other towns of the gold belt, so on a wider map it appears as one part of a chain of settlements that grew with the mines.
