Stratford-upon-Avon lies on the River Avon in Warwickshire. Its centre still follows the grid laid out in the late twelfth century, when the town was founded as a planned market town. Three streets run parallel to the river, and others cross them at right angles. The pattern is clear on any map.
The town is best known as the birthplace of William Shakespeare. His birthplace on Henley Street, Holy Trinity Church, where he is buried, and the Royal Shakespeare Theatre on the riverbank bring visitors from around the world. The medieval Clopton Bridge still carries traffic over the Avon.

The river curves along the eastern edge of the old town. The long stone Clopton Bridge crosses it, leading traffic into the centre.
Canal basin
The Stratford Canal ends in a basin beside Bancroft Gardens and connects to the Avon through a lock. It adds a small, precise water shape near the theatre.
