Straubing lies on the Danube in Lower Bavaria, at the heart of the fertile Gäuboden plain. The old town is built around a long, broad market square that runs east to west, divided in the middle by the tall city tower. From above, this square forms a strong spine, with narrower streets branching off towards the river and the former town walls.
The town is widely known for the Gäubodenvolksfest, one of the largest folk festivals in Bavaria, held each August. Its history also includes the story of Agnes Bernauer, who was drowned in the Danube here in 1435 and whose fate is still retold in plays. The river runs along the northern side of town, with wide meadows along its banks.
