Susurluk lies in Balıkesir province in north-western Turkey, on flat agricultural land beside the river that shares its name. The town sits on the main road between Bursa and İzmir, and its layout follows that route: a central area of shops and older streets near the river, newer neighbourhoods spreading outward, and farmland stretching in every direction beyond the edges.
For many Turkish travellers the town is known for its roadside stops, where toasted sandwiches and frothy ayran have become a small tradition. Susurluk is also home to a long-running sugar factory. Its name is familiar nationally as well because of a 1996 car crash near the town that exposed links between politicians, security officials and organised crime.
