Svobodnyy stands on the right bank of the Zeya River in Amur Oblast, in Russia's Far East. It grew up as a settlement for building the Trans-Siberian Railway. The railway still defines its layout, with tracks and station yards running beside a regular grid of streets that stretches away from the river.
The town's name is linked to space travel today. The Vostochny Cosmodrome was built nearby, and earlier a military launch site operated in the area. Around the town, the land opens into river plains and forest, with the wide Zeya forming a natural western boundary.
