Swakopmund lies on the coast of Namibia where the Namib Desert meets the cold Atlantic. The town is a neat grid of wide streets laid out along the shore, bordered on the south by the broad, usually dry bed of the Swakop River. Beyond the last houses, sand and gravel plains run inland, and the edge of the town is drawn sharply against the empty desert.
Swakopmund was founded in the 1890s as the main port for German South West Africa, and its centre still has many buildings from that period. A historic jetty reaches into the sea, and the town today is a base for trips into the dunes and along the coast, with its cool, often foggy climate.
