Tafresh lies high in the mountains of Markazi province in central Iran, between Tehran and Arak. On the map, the town follows the shape of its valley. Streets stretch along the valley floor and older lanes gather in the centre. The built area thins out quickly where the slopes become too steep, leaving bare ridges all around.
The town has a long reputation as a place of learning, and many Iranian scholars, writers and officials have family roots in Tafresh. Today it is home to Tafresh University.
