Taft lies south-west of the city of Yazd in central Iran, at the foot of the Shir Kuh range, one of the highest mountain areas in the region. On a map the town forms a green strip along a valley, where orchards and gardens follow water brought down from the mountains.
Thanks to its higher elevation and water supply, Taft has long been a cooler retreat from the heat of Yazd and is known for its gardens and fruit. The town has also historically been home to a Zoroastrian community, part of the religious heritage of the Yazd region.
