Taishan lies in the Jiangmen area of western Guangdong, between the Pearl River Delta and the South China Sea. Its urban centre, Taicheng, sits on low ground surrounded by green hills, and the map shows a dense older core of narrow streets. Around it lie newer districts of broader avenues. Beyond the city, the county reaches the coast and several offshore islands, including Shangchuan.
Taishan is known worldwide as an ancestral home of overseas Chinese. From the nineteenth century onward, many of the early Chinese communities in North America came from here, and Taishanese long served as a common language in Chinatowns abroad. Money sent home by emigrants helped build the Xinning Railway in the early twentieth century and many of the arcaded shophouse streets still found in the town.
