Tamaru lies in Mie Prefecture, in the countryside southwest of Ise, and is now part of Tamaki town. This is a landscape of low hills and cultivated plains. Villages cluster along roads and waterways, and rice paddies fill the flat ground between them in the careful rectangular patterns found across rural Japan.
From above, the map has a gentle rhythm. Small groups of houses sit along winding lanes, larger roads link them across the paddies, and a railway cuts a straight line through the scene. Where the land rises, the fields end and wooded hills take over, marked by the absence of streets.
