Traunreut is in the Chiemgau region of Upper Bavaria, between Lake Chiemsee and the river Traun. It is one of Bavaria's younger towns. It was founded after the Second World War on the site of a former munitions plant, and refugees and displaced people from Central and Eastern Europe settled here. A large household appliances factory has been a major employer for decades.
Because it was planned instead of growing slowly, Traunreut looks different on a map from the medieval towns around it. There is no dense old core. Instead, streets curve in broad arcs through residential districts, with generous green spaces and a clearly defined centre. Forest surrounds much of the town, and some of the former plant's layout still shows through in the outline.
