Tui stands on the north bank of the Miño River in southern Galicia, directly opposite the Portuguese fortress town of Valença. The river is the border. It flows broad and slow below the old town, and the two towns face each other from their hills on either side.
The cathedral crowns the hill at the heart of Tui. It was built with battlements, like a fortress, because of the town's position on a frontier. An iron bridge from the late nineteenth century carries road and rail across the river, and Tui is a major stop on the Portuguese Way of the Camino de Santiago.
