Ulundi lies in northern KwaZulu-Natal, on open, rolling ground north of the White Umfolozi River. It was purpose-built in the 1970s as the capital of the KwaZulu homeland, and later shared the role of provincial capital until that settled on Pietermaritzburg. The map shows this history in wide roads, spacious government precincts and roomy residential areas.
The area is central to Zulu history. Nearby stood oNdini, the royal homestead of King Cetshwayo. On the plain outside the town, the Battle of Ulundi in July 1879 ended the Anglo-Zulu War. The reconstructed royal enclosure and the battlefield memorial remain important heritage sites for visitors and for the Zulu nation.
