Ventimiglia is the last Italian town on the Ligurian coast before France. Its map divides naturally in two along the Roia River: on the west bank, the medieval quarter of Ventimiglia Alta climbs a steep hill in a tangle of narrow alleys, while the east bank holds the flatter, more regular streets of the modern town, stretching along the seafront.

Further west, close to the frontier, the Balzi Rossi caves have yielded important prehistoric finds. Behind it all, the Maritime Alps rise quickly from the coast.
