Vic is the capital of the Osona comarca in central Catalonia, in the middle of a wide, fertile plain surrounded by hills. The historic centre is a dense, rounded shape of narrow streets. Its outline is still traced by a sequence of rambles, the broad avenues built along the line of the former city walls. The small river Mèder runs along the edge of the old town.
At the heart of the plan is the Plaça Major, often called the Mercadal. It is one of the largest squares in Catalonia and has held a market since medieval times. Nearby stand the neoclassical cathedral with its Romanesque bell tower and a Roman temple, rediscovered in the nineteenth century when buildings around it were demolished. Vic is also known across Spain for its cured sausages.
