Viñales is a small town in the far west of Cuba, in the province of Pinar del Río. Its plan is very simple. A long main street lined with low, porched houses runs through the centre, and a handful of parallel and cross streets fill out a short grid. Beyond them, the valley floor opens into fields broken by the steep, rounded limestone hills known as mogotes.
The Viñales Valley was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape in 1999, recognised for its karst scenery and its traditional farming, especially tobacco grown by hand and dried in thatched barns. The town is the base for visitors exploring the valley, its caves and its viewpoints.
