Vincennes stands on the east bank of the Wabash River in southwestern Indiana, across the water from Illinois. It began as a French fur-trading post in the early 1730s and is regarded as the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the state. It later served as the first capital of the Indiana Territory.
The map still carries that river-town origin. The downtown grid is set at an angle, lined up with the Wabash rather than with the compass-point survey grid used in much of the Midwest. Further from the river, newer streets turn to follow cardinal directions, and the two patterns meet at odd, interesting angles.
A Vincennes map poster brings out that layering. The Wabash sweeps along one side, the older tilted blocks sit beside the riverbank, and later neighbourhoods stretch out towards farmland. Near the water, the George Rogers Clark National Historical Park marks the town's place in the American Revolutionary War.
