Vryburg lies in the North West province of South Africa, on the high, dry plains that edge toward the Kalahari. The town was laid out on a regular grid, and from above its straight streets and rectangular blocks stand out clearly against the vast flat farmland that surrounds it on every side.
Founded in the early 1880s, Vryburg briefly served as the capital of the Republic of Stellaland, a small independent state that existed for only a few years before being absorbed. Today it is known as a major centre of cattle farming, sometimes described as the Texas of South Africa, with a large livestock trade and ranching all around.
