Wainuiomata lies in its own valley east of the Hutt Valley, part of Lower Hutt yet separated from it by a ridge crossed by a single hill road. From above, the suburb fills the valley floor almost completely, with housing streets curving in loops and cul-de-sacs and bush-covered hills closing in on every side.
The Wainuiomata River runs south from the settlement through a long rural valley before reaching the coast near Baring Head. The town grew rapidly in the mid-twentieth century as a housing area for the Wellington region, which explains the consistent, planned character of many of its streets. To the east rise the hills of Remutaka Forest Park.
