Wakuya is a town in Miyagi Prefecture, in Japan's Tōhoku region. It lies on the rice-growing plain north of Sendai, where flat fields of paddy meet low, forested hills. The town centre is small, with its streets clustered around the main roads and the railway, and much of the municipality is farmland.
Wakuya has an important place in Japanese history. In the eighth century gold was discovered here, the first gold found in Japan. It was sent to Nara to help gild the Great Buddha at Tōdai-ji. Koganeyama Shrine commemorates the discovery, and the town continues to celebrate this connection.
