Wangkui is a county town in Heilongjiang, in the far northeast of China, on the Songnen Plain. This is broad, level farmland known for its dark, fertile black soil. From above, the landscape is divided into large rectangular fields, and straight roads run across the plain for long distances, rarely bending.
The town follows the same logic. Its streets form a largely orthogonal grid, with wide main avenues and bigger blocks than you would find in an older city further south. At the edges the grid breaks up into farm roads and clusters of villages spread across the plain, so the boundary between town and countryside is easy to trace.
