Wickede lies in the upper Ruhr valley in North Rhine-Westphalia, in the Soest district. The river enters the map from the east and bends westward past the town. The valley floor is narrow enough that roads and the railway stay close to the water, which gives the map a clear east–west flow.
The built-up area climbs out of the valley toward higher ground on both sides, and the streets thin out as the slopes steepen. Wooded hills sit to the south, toward the Sauerland, while open, gentler land lies to the north on the Hellweg side. The town changes character between its river side and its upland side.
