Windsor lies on the south bank of the Thames in Berkshire, west of London. From above, the castle is the defining shape. It stands on a chalk ridge above the river, and its walls and wards make an outline visible even at small scale. The town's streets gather tightly around its gates.
South of the castle, the Long Walk runs as an avenue several kilometres long, perfectly straight, out into Windsor Great Park, a large area of parkland, woods and water. Across the river, a bridge links Windsor to Eton, and the college grounds and playing fields spread over the far bank.
