Winterthur is the sixth-largest city in Switzerland, about twenty minutes by train northeast of Zurich. Its medieval old town is small and clearly defined: a tight rectangle of streets around the Marktgasse, one of the country's longest pedestrian shopping streets. On the map it is a dense knot that the later city has grown around.
In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Winterthur became an industrial centre. Engineering firms such as Sulzer and the Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works built large works beside the railway. Many of those halls have since become homes, schools and cultural spaces. The city is also known for its art museums and for the Technorama science centre.
