Xiping lies in south-eastern Gansu, in the hilly country of the Tianshui area, where the Loess Plateau breaks up into ridges and valleys draining toward the Wei River. This is land shaped by fine yellow soil and water. The hillsides are cut into terraces, and settlements gather wherever a valley floor leaves room.
On a map the town is a tight group of streets along its valley, and the roads leaving it follow the watercourses or climb in switchbacks over the ridges. There is no wide grid. The streets fit into whatever flat ground the landscape allows.
