Ya'an lies where the Sichuan Basin meets the mountains to the west, and its map is shaped by the Qingyi River. The river winds through the city in a narrow valley, and streets follow both banks, connected by several bridges. Steep, forested hills rise close on each side, leaving the urban area long and closely tied to the water.
The city is known in China as the rain city, since it receives rain on a large share of days each year. The damp climate supports dense forests in the surrounding mountains, which are home to giant pandas, and the Bifengxia panda base lies within the prefecture.
Ya'an also has a long connection with tea. Mengding Mountain, nearby, is one of the oldest places of tea cultivation in China, and the city was a starting point of the old tea-horse road into Tibet. A Ya'an map poster shows a small city held between river and mountains.
