Yima sits in the hill country of western Henan, between the larger cities of Luoyang and Sanmenxia. From above it reads as a linear town. Rather than spreading outwards in rings, it stretches along a valley floor, with streets, rail lines and a river corridor laid out almost in parallel. Slopes press in from both sides and keep the built area narrow.
The town grew around coal. Mining gave Yima its purpose in the twentieth century, and on a map this shows as rail sidings, works compounds and blocks of housing set close to the transport line. Newer districts fill the flatter ground. Their straighter streets contrast with the older lanes, which follow the bends of the valley.
In black and white, the town becomes a study in direction. Railway line
A main rail line runs through Yima, linking it with Luoyang to the east and Sanmenxia to the west. Its tracks are one of the clearest lines on the poster.
