York is laid out on a regular grid dating to the colonial era, with Market Street and George Street meeting at Continental Square in the centre. From above, the blocks are neat and even. Codorus Creek winds through the grid, and a ring of later neighbourhoods and industrial areas spreads toward the rolling Pennsylvania farmland.
In 1777 and 1778, the Continental Congress met in York while Philadelphia was occupied, and the Articles of Confederation were adopted here. The city is nicknamed the White Rose City, a reference to the English House of York. It also has a long manufacturing history, and the York Peppermint Pattie was first made here.
